New learning commons and library annex for California Baptist University. The Learning Commons has been conceived as an active hub on CBU’s campus – in part an expansion of the Annie Gabriel Library as well as a place that provides multiple ways for students to discover, build and apply their personal knowledge. It is a place in spirit that reflects the values and vibrancy of the unique CBU culture.
Located in the geographic heart of an evolving campus, the learning commons completes an active corner between Wallace Theater and the new College of Engineering. It is positioned to graciously receive students from the intersection of the primary north-south and new east-west pathways.
The building program is generally organized around a central space – a light-filled vertical study component which includes a grand stair, places for study and display of books which connects the community of learners on all floor levels. The vertical zoning begins at the active and social ground floor, which extends the lively campus fabric into the building. The second level includes active collaborative spaces and research support. The third floor is dedicated to focused study and is configured as a quiet loft for reflection.
